Are you giving something up for Lent? Chocolate, biscuits, alcohol, Facebook....the choices are endless. But what do you replace it with? Sometimes it's good to stop something for a while, but we need to beware replacing it with something equally addictive or time-wasting. Can you find more time for God during Lent? Take up reading a small passage of the Bible every day....pray for 5 minutes... read a helpful Christian book.
Or perhaps, follow some of the ideas that help us to consider others in the world before ourselves. Try Christian Aid's 'Count Your Blessings' app http://www.christianaid.org.uk/getinvolved/lent-2013/count-your-blessings/apps.aspx?gclid=COufxcLatbUCFeXLtAodFyoAUg
Or follow Love Life Live Lent on Twitter #livelent @LiveLent - recommended by Sentamu, Archbishop of York and with regular tweets from him and many others.
Or give up busyness for Lent! Try http://www.notbusy.co.uk/
Whatever you do, find time to meet with God in it all.
Lent is a time of abstinence, of giving things up. So Shrove Tuesday is the last chance to indulge yourself, and to use up the foods that aren't allowed in Lent. Pancakes are eaten on this day because they contain fat, butter and eggs which historically were forbidden during Lent.
Why not join in some of the events and services that are happening during Lent this year?
On Ash Wednesday, we have a Benefice service at 7.30pm at St Mary's, Church Fenton when we will share Holy Communion and be marked with the sign of the cross on our foreheads in ash - made using last year's palm crosses.
Then, every Thursday for the following 5 weeks, at 7.30pm at Kelcbar Community Centre, everyone is very welcome to join in the Lent discussion group. This year we will be looking at Justice in the World.
We hope this site will help you learn about our church community and all it does. Use our "I want to..." page to help you answer all your questions.
